Hi. I would like to know if there is a way to decrease the size of our plant layout particularly with respect to Machine .dwg files from Suppliers? When we get a new machine in our plant we add it to the layout. The .dwg files for a machine show all the nuts and bolts and has all the layers imported in from the Supplier. One idea is to outline the machine and get rid of all the rest of the detail. Most people don’t like this idea. Once the machine has been added to our plant layout there is no need to modify it ever. We may move it’s location or resize it, but that’s all.
For example, if a single machine drawing takes 25 mB including all the nuts and bolts of detail, and the multitude of layers from the Supplier, is there a way to change the machine drawing to reduce the number mB and have only one layer (At this point we would then add it to our Plant layout)?
Yes, Karen, there are at least two ways of reducing the file size as per your drawing requirement.
1. Use PURGE command on the drawing and it will remove every unused layer, block and other redundant objects making the file size smaller and a clean file overall.
2. Use write block to export the part of drawing that you actually need as a new DWG leaving behind all the clutter. This method has the best results and you can PURGE exported drawings to get the best results.
I will try adding a video on my YouTube channel as well related to this, will share the video URL once it is published.
